Do I have to be fit to join?
Okay, well it obviously helps to be fit because Kickboxing is an energetic sport and the classes can be quite vigorous, but you don't need to be super fit to join in. The classes run to your ability and you will soon find your fitness level improves.
Do I have to be flexible?
Again, that's a bonus, but there are Black Belts out there that can't touch their toes or kick very high. Your flexibility will improve but it takes time, patience and lots of practice.
Can I come on my own?
Of course you can. Our classes are very friendly and you will soon makes friends. We do individual and partnered work and swap around so you will quickly get to know everyone.
What should I wear/bring?
Just come in light, comfortable sports clothes (no football shirts or big logos please), with a light pair of trainers. You won't need to buy a Kickboxing uniform until you are ready to grade for your next belt level (we have embroidered uniform trousers, t-shirts, vests (optional) and new for this year hoddies (optional) all with the club logo) Make sure you bring plenty of water - Kickboxing is thirsty work and there will be water breaks.
Do I have to learn a foreign language?
Yippeeeee - no you don't. Unlike most Martial Arts Kickboxing comes from the USA and so all classes are taught in English.
Is there any theory to learn?
Only a little, such as target areas and the names of techniques and why we do them... all in English.
Can I train if I have certain medical conditions?
For medical conditions that could be affected by training (such as diabetes, disc problems, brittle ashthma) then providing you have permission in writing from your doctor then, yes. All medical conditions that could affect or be affected by your training must be included on your licence application form as well. Your health and safety is a priority.
Will I have to bow?
Yes, a lot, as in all Martial Arts. This is to show respect to the Art, your Instructor and the other students and is part of the culture of respect and courtesy that we try to instil in everyone. It will soon become very normal to you, as will the use of Sir and Ma'am when talking to people in the training hall.
What if I'm scared of getting hurt?
Most people don't want to get hurt - I certainly don't! Contact at JB Kickboxing and Master D's club is generally light when sparring (unless you choose to do full contact competitions) and with full safety equipment. No sport is without a small degree of risk, however, but Martial Arts are surprisingly safe and you are at more risk gardening or riding a bicycle.
